When it comes to automotive safety in Brazil, Citroën has recently been at the center of a storm. After the Latin NCAP (The organization that evaluates car safety in Latin America) assigned low ratings to models like the C3, leaving many consumers apprehensive. “Am I putting my family at risk?” became one of the most common questions in Google searches.
In this article, we confront the negative problems of the past and show the positive solution that the brand implemented to regain the trust of the Brazilian market.
The Negative Problem: Why Were the Grades Low?
The main reason for the Latin NCAP criticism was not necessarily the car’s structure (which is modern, based on the CMP platform), but rather… list of standard equipment.
- The Flaw: Initially, the C3 and some versions of the Aircross came from the factory with only 2 airbags and without advanced driver assistance systems. In the current, extremely rigorous testing protocol, this results in a penalty in the final score.
- Perception: For Brazilians, a rating of “zero” or “one” gives the impression of a fragile car, which has generated a wave of negative videos and devaluation in the used car market.
The Positive Solution: Stellantis’ Turnaround in 2026
Citroën listened to the market. Starting with the 2026 model year, there was a move to “protect” the brand in terms of safety:
- 6 Airbags as Standard: Following the trend of rivals like the HB20 and Onix, Citroën has started standardizing the 6 airbags (front, side, and curtain) across more versions, not just the top-of-the-line models.
- Structural Reinforcements: Minor adjustments were made to the production line in Porto Real (RJ) to ensure better protection against side impacts, aiming for a new round of tests with a higher score.
- Arrival of ADAS: Versions such as Shine The Basalt and Aircross models now come with a driver assistance package, including autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning.
The Verdict: Is it Safe to Buy Today?
If you are looking at a used Citroën (2023/2024), pay attention to the presence of only 2 airbags. They are not “unsafe” according to Brazilian legal standards, but they are below what the competition offers.
If your focus is on a Citroën 2026 onwardsHowever, the story is different. The leap in active and passive safety equipment puts the brand back in the game. The CMP platform is global and very robust; with the right equipment, the car becomes one of the most balanced options for those seeking urban and highway protection.
