The Downside: Why does the headlight fog up?

• Normal: A fine mist that disappears after 30 minutes with the headlights on or after the car has been in the sun.
• Defect: Accumulation of water at the bottom of the headlight (puddle) or droplets that never dry. In these cases, there is a fault in the lens adhesive or a crack in the housing, requiring replacement under warranty.

The Positive Solution: How to eliminate humidity at home

If your problem is just annoying fog that comes and goes, the solution might be simple:

1. Inspection of the Covers: Check that the rear rubber caps (where you change the bulb) are properly fitted. If they are loose, moisture can easily get in.
2. Breath Cleaning: Identify the small rubber tubes behind the headlight and make sure there is no dirt blocking the airflow.
3. The Silica Trick: In persistent cases outside of warranty, many owners place a small silica gel packet (like the ones that come in shoe boxes) inside the tailgate. It absorbs residual moisture without affecting the headlight.

Expert Tip

Verdict: Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun directly on the outside of the headlight lens; excessive heat can deform the polycarbonate or cause premature yellowing. If the fogging is light, turn on the high beams for 15 minutes with the car stationary. The heat from the bulbs themselves usually dissipates the fog through the natural vents.
