You’re stopped in your car, listening to music with the engine off, and suddenly everything goes dark and the message appears. “Economy Mode Activated” (or Eco Mode) on the dashboard? You try turning the radio on again and it doesn’t turn on?

Calm down, it’s not a defect! It’s the BSI (The car’s electronic “brain”) working so you don’t get stranded.

1. What is Eco Mode?

Unlike the “Eco Button” in other cars (which is for saving fuel), Citroën’s Eco Mode is for… save battery.

French cars have a lot of onboard electronics. If you leave the radio, interior lights, or dashboard on for too long with the engine off, the battery can die to the point where you won’t be able to start the car later.

2. How does it work?

Extra Tip:

Many Citroën owners try to “bypass” this system by installing the radio directly on the battery.. Important notice: Never do this! Tampering with the original wiring to disable Eco Mode can cause serious errors in the electronic control unit (BSI) and even fire hazards. The system is there to protect your wallet!
