Oil Level and Pressure Sensor (Citroën C3/C4)

There are two distinct warnings that C3 and C4 owners often confuse, and the causes are quite different:

1. “Check Oil Level”: It usually appears as soon as you turn the key. It indicates that the oil level in the crankcase is low. In 1.6 and 2.0 engines, the Level Sensor (which is located at the back of the block) can fail due to oxidation or dirt, giving false warnings even when the dipstick reads “full”.
2. “Insufficient Oil Pressure”: This is the warning. critical. This indicates that the oil is not circulating strongly enough to lubricate the engine. If this warning appears while the car is in motion, you should turn off the engine immediately.

• Common Causes:
  • Incorrect Oil Filter: Using poor quality filters or filters with a different internal thread/valve pitch can restrict flow.
  • Pressure Switch (Chives): It is very common for the oil pressure switch to leak internally or short circuit, triggering the warning light even when there is no real problem with the pump.
  • Oil Sludge: Using oil outside of specifications (5W3 or 5W40 Synthetic) creates sludge that clogs the oil pump’s “strainer”.
• Location of Protection:
  • The oil monitoring system is powered by BSI (Cabin).
  • Correct Fuse: It is usually the F1of 15A in the BSI, which protects the instrument panel and monitoring sensors. If it burns out, the panel may go blank or the markings may freeze.

Technical Tip: Always check the physical dipstick before blindly trusting the digital sensor. If the dipstick indicates the level is OK and the warning persists, replace the pressure switch (an inexpensive part) before condemning the oil pump.
