The culprit is… Ignition SwitchIt’s an electrical component located just behind the ignition lock where you insert the key. It has several metal “tracks” that connect the circuits.
- The Problem of Wear and Tear: With use (and especially if you use a very heavy keychain), the internal contacts of the switch suffer wear or overheating.
- The Symptom of the Air Conditioner: In the Citroën line, there is a specific circuit in the ignition switch called the “power switch”. If this circuit fails, the engine starts normally, but the system understands that it should not release energy to high-consumption components, such as the air conditioning compressor and the interior fan.
- Match Failure: If the fuel line supplying the fuel pump or ignition fails, the starter motor will turn (the famous “nhém-nhém-nhém” sound), but the car won’t start because there’s no spark or fuel.
How to Diagnose: A simple test: with the car running and the air conditioning on (but not working), gently wiggle the key in the ignition (without turning off the engine). If the fan or air conditioning starts working again for a second, the ignition switch has a bad internal connection.
Location of Protection (Fuses): Although the problem is mechanical/electrical in the contact, the switch sends the signal to the BSI (Cabin) and for the BSM (Hood).
- Correct Fuse: Check the fuse. F7 (20A) in the BSI or the Maxi-fuses ignition under the BSM plate. If the switch shorts, it can blow these master fuses.
Golden Tip: Avoid using heavy keychains. The excessive weight swinging around while you drive acts like a lever, prematurely wearing out both the mechanical lock cylinder and the electrical switch.
