When connecting an automotive scanner (a tool that reads car error codes), you may encounter codes that begin with the letter \”U\”. These indicate communication failures. Common examples:

  • U1000: General network communication failure. The car knows something is disconnected, but doesn’t know what.
  • U1113: No communication with the instrument panel. Indicates that the panel has no power or the network cable is broken.
  • U1208: Invalid data sent by the engine control unit. This may cause the dashboard to light up, but not display engine RPM or temperature.

Step-by-Step Technical Diagnosis

To perform these tests, you will need a multimeter and a screwdriver or Torx screwdriver to remove trim.

  1. Fuse Check: Open the BSI cover under the steering wheel. Locate the approximately 5A or 10A fuse responsible for the instrument panel (refer to the manual, usually identified by the instrument icon). Test for continuity with a multimeter.
  2. Connector Voltage Test: Remove the panel frame and disconnect the main plug. With the ignition on, check for 12V at the power pins. If there is power but the panel does not turn on, the fault is internal to the panel’s circuit board.
  3. BSI reset: Sometimes the system software freezes. Disconnect the car battery for 10 minutes, reconnect it, and wait 2 minutes before turning the key. This forces the VAN/CAN communication to restart.
  4. Visual Grounding Inspection: Check that the ground (negative) cables attached to the vehicle body near the battery are tight. A poor ground connection can cause ghost lights or a complete power outage.

The C3’s multiplexed system requires specific diagnostic tools (such as Lexia/Diagbox) to correctly configure the modules. Avoid makeshift solutions or direct wire connections, as this can burn out the BSI, which is expensive to replace.

Prevention Tips

To prevent VAN/CAN network failures in your C3, always keep the battery in good condition. Batteries with low voltage (below 12.2V) generate reading errors in the multiplexed network, causing the modules not to \”wake up\” correctly. In addition, keep the water drains under the windshield clean to prevent moisture from reaching the internal wiring.
